FAQ
Questions,answered ahead.
Using it
Do I really never need the Han/Eng key?
Almost never. Enter Korean with the English layout active and ChukChuk reads each word and writes it in Hangul, leaving English words alone. The demo here runs the identical engine that ships inside the apps, so try it yourself.
What if it converts something I did not want?
Tap the brand key (where Han/Eng used to sit) and the word is restored to the keys you pressed. Undo one particular word on three consecutive occasions and it moves to the leave-as-is list.
Can it fix text I already typed?
Yes. Select the text and convert it in one go: ⌃⌥Space on the Mac, Ctrl+Alt+Space on Windows, the wand button above the keyboard on phones.
How do word lists work?
Add words to leave as is or to always convert. English phrases you use often can become leave-as-is words on their own. Lists can be exported and imported as a file.
Languages other than Korean and English?
For now, Korean (2-set) and English (QWERTY) only.
Accuracy & speed
Where does 99.94% come from?
From 137,621 words of open sentences that were never used to build the dictionary, fed to the engine one key at a time. Development and test sets are kept apart, and the test set was run once at the end. The conditions and tables are in the accuracy section of the home page.
When does it get things wrong?
Very short words without context (to vs 새, go vs 해, so vs 내) are the hardest. Rarely, mobile auto-capitalization collides with Korean double consonants such as ㄲ or ㅆ.
Will it slow my typing down?
The engine spends 0.42 µs per key on average. Any delay you can feel comes from the OS input system, not from ChukChuk.
Privacy
Does anything I type leave my device?
No. The keyboards and input methods have no internet capability, and every decision happens on the device. Learned words and stats are stored locally only.
What about password and address fields?
Password fields are never converted. Auto-switching pauses in email, URL and number fields, and addresses such as www.naver.com are read as one unit.
Does the iPhone keyboard need Full Access?
No. The ChukChuk iOS keyboard does not request Full Access.
Install & release
When and where can I get it?
All five platforms are being prepared. Dates will be posted on the download page, and launch-alert subscribers get one email.
How much will it cost?
Pricing will be announced here first.
Does it work offline?
Yes. The dictionary and engine live inside the app, so airplane mode makes no difference.
Can companies or schools use it?
Yes. Because nothing you type is sent out, it is easy to review under strict security policies. Send questions through the contact page.
